Who we are...

A Brief History of Pegleg Penny

My handheld mixer joined my family in December of 2006. It seemed like it was just what I needed to round out the kitchen in my Chicago apartment. She proved resilient. Tackling cake after cake and showing the frosting who was boss. After a fluke accident with Bailey's Irish Cream Cupcakes, my hand held mixer lost one of her able legs and was rechristened with the name Pegleg Penny or affectionately referred to 'As the little mixer that could' by her peers. With a new attitude on life and an adventurous spirit, this blog was born.  We have used it as a tool for experimentation, trying new recipes, altering recipes, and ad libbing as we go along. Sadly, Pegleg Penny lost the battle with her disease in the summer of 2009. After losing the only able leg she had left, Pegleg retired from our Chicago Kitchen Stadium, but remains a figure head in our hallowed halls.

While she has been replaced in the kitchen, her spirit lives on.  This blogs goal is to document our adventures, misadventures, and testing in our little Chicago kitchen.

Vanilla Ice
After Pegleg's untimely demise it was difficult thinking I'd get back in the kitchen.  I don't have the upper body strength to just whip everything up by hand and the thought of even wheeling a wooden spoon made me tired.  I wanted to open Pegleg up and somehow fix her, my roommates didn't think that was the best idea.  Screwdrivers, motors, moving parts, and electricity just didn't sound like a winning combination.  They were kind enough to purchase me a little white handheld Kitchenaid.  It was super cute and I was super excited.  Sure it was no Pegleg Penny, but I was sure I would find the adventure in this little.  After a 'getting to know you' period, I christened him Vanilla Ice and we got along just famously.

The KitchenAid
Vanilla Ice's stint in our kitchen was brief.  Not because he couldn't deliver, but because Santa had bigger plans for me. Fast forward to Christmas Day 2009 - Santa brought me my very own stand up KitchenAid mixer.  No longer would I have to wait to have a wedding to get one.  No longer would my arm get tired of holding the hand held mixer up.  Should I need warp speed settings, I would have them. The clouds parted, the birds started singing, and I was in baking heaven.  Our 'getting to know you' period has been a little longer since this mixer is backed by so much power, so it has yet to be named.  But don't worry.  We are becoming a pretty awesome power couple and I know that we will be able to conquer everything!

As for me...
I like to hang out in the kitchen, tell stories, and name my appliances.
